  • Pharmacodynamics:

    When ingested splits lipase in the small intestine with the formation of ricinoleic acid, which causes irritation of the intestinal receptors throughout its extent and reflex enhancement of peristalsis. The laxative effect usually occurs after 5-6 hours. When taking castor oil, there is also an increase in contractions in the musculature of the uterus.

    Indications:

    Constipation, bowel preparation before diagnostic procedures.

    Contraindications:

    Hypersensitivity to the drug, "acute" abdomen, pregnancy, children under 12 years of age, poisoning with fat-soluble substances (phosphorus, benzene, etc.), treatment of helminthic infection with male fern extract.

    Pregnancy and lactation:

    The use of the drug during pregnancy is contraindicated.

    If it is necessary to use the drug during lactation, breastfeeding should be stopped for the entire treatment period.

    Dosing and Administration:

    Inside.

    Adults for 15-30 grams (1-2 tablespoons) once a day.

    Children from 12 to 18 years the drug is prescribed by a doctor - 10-15 g (1 dessert - 1 tablespoon) once a day.

    Duration of application - no more than 3 days.

    Overdose:

    It develops when taking castor oil in a dose of more than 7 g / kg body weight.

    Characteristic symptoms: diarrhea, sharp pains of a spastic character in the abdomen, impaired renal function, dizziness, hallucinations, loss of consciousness.

    Specific antidotes are atropine sulfate and loperamide.

    Measures of assistance include drug cancellation, fluid and electrolyte replacement (preferably combined oral and intravenous administration), symptomatic therapy aimed at eliminating abnormalities. With the development of neurotoxic effects are introduced diazepam 5-10 mg intravenously.

    Interaction:

    With simultaneous application reduces the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D and K.

    In doses up to 4 g / day increases the absorption of fat-soluble drugs - the extract of male fern, mebendazole, griseofulvin, probucol.

    With simultaneous application with salt laxatives, a strong laxative effect is possible.

    M-cholinoblocking agents (atropine sulfate, platyphylline, pirenzepine), antispasmodics (papaverine, drotaverine) weaken the action of castor oil.

    Strengthens the action of the agents stimulating the contractile activity of the myometrium (methelergometrin, ergometrine, oxytocin, prostaglandins), up to the threat of rupture of the uterus in childbirth.
