The drug belongs to the list of psychotropic substances (list III). Diazepam refers to a group of benzodiazepine derivatives.
The drug acts on many structures of the central nervous system. The mechanism of action of the drug is closely related to the inhibitory endogenous neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the GABA-A receptor, through which the neurotransmitter realizes its effects in the central nervous system.
Like all other benzodiazepines, diazepam enhances the inhibitory effect of GABA -ergic neurons in the central nervous system.
The clinical effect of diazepam is manifested by pronounced anxiolytic and anticonvulsant action; the hypnotic and central miorelaxing effect is somewhat less pronounced.
