Minocycline can be effective against multiple sclerosis

As shown by a Canadian study, a cheap tetracycline antibiotic minocycline can slow the development of multiple sclerosis in patients with early disease. The effectiveness of the remedy was noted after six months and a year of use. The results of the study are published in New England Journal of Medicine.
The study, which was conducted with the participation of 142 patients, demonstrated the promise of using minocycline in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS): after six months of using the drugthe uncorrected probability of manifestations of the disease was 33.4%, while the placebo group - 61%, that is, the difference is 27.6%. After correction of the obtained data on the index of increase in the sclerosis foci, the difference between the minocycline group and the control group was 18.5%. However, after two years of therapy, the beneficial effect of minocycline became less pronounced.
In favor of the use of minokikline among patients with MS also speaks of its price - the annual course of minocycline in Canada costs 600 Canadian dollars (444 US dollars), while specific therapy for MS will cost 20-40 thousand Canadian dollars.
