    C.05.A.D.03   Benzocaine

    Pharmacodynamics:

Local anesthetic for superficial anesthesia. Prevents the occurrence of pain in the endings of sensitive nerves and pain impulses along nerve fibers.

Does not have a resorptive effect.

When applied to the oral mucosa, the effect develops after 1 minute.

It is believed that when administered orally benzocaine has an anorexigenic effect, which is probably due to the effect on the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract.

    Pharmacokinetics:

Benzocaine is hardly soluble in water, which causes its slow absorption. Like all ether derivatives of para-aminobenzoic acid, it is cleaved by esterase in the blood plasma and in the liver. As a result, paraaminobenzoic acid and ethyl alcohol metabolized to acetylcoenzyme A are formed. Paraaminobenzoic acid is conjugated with glycine or excreted unchanged by the kidneys.

    Indications:

In the combination therapy for oral administration: anesthesia of mucous membranes for spasms and pains in the stomach (including ulcer disease); increased sensitivity of the esophagus.

As a part of combined therapy for external and topical application: pain with superficial lesions of the skin and mucous membranes, with myositis, diseases of superficial veins, hemorrhoids and perianal cracks.
