    R.05.C.A.03   Guaifenesin

    Pharmacodynamics:Mucolytic and expectorant, reduces the viscosity of phlegm, facilitates its removal and promotes the transition of non-productive cough to productive. The duration of action for a single admission is 3.5-4 hours.
    Pharmacokinetics:Absorption from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) - fast (after 25-30 minutes after ingestion). Half-life is 1 hour. Penetrates into tissues containing acidic mucopolysaccharides. Metabolism is in the liver. It is excreted by the lungs (with phlegm) and by the kidneys in the form of inactive metabolites.
    Indications:Inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract, including acute infections, influenza, acute laryngitis, pharyngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis, with difficulty in sputum discharge.
    Contraindications:Increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug. Stomach ulcer, 12 duodenal ulcer in the acute stage, gastric bleeding in the anamnesis. Children under 2 years.
    Carefully:Pregnancy, lactation, children's age (up to 12 years).
    Pregnancy and lactation:Use with caution.
    Dosing and Administration:Apply no more than 4-6 single doses during the day. The drug should be used after meals. Single dose: for children from 2 to 6 years - 1/2 -1 teaspoon (50-100 mg) with an interval of 6-8 hours. Children from b to 12 years - 1-2 teaspoons (100-200 mg) 3-4 times a day. Children from 12 years and adults - 2-4 teaspoons (200-400 mg) 3-4 times a day.
    Side effects:From the digestive system: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea.
    From the nervous system: dizziness, headache, drowsiness.
    Allergic reactions - skin rash, hives.
    Overdose:Especially high doses of guaifenesin can cause nausea and vomiting. When vomiting. should take measures to replenish fluid in the body and monitor the level of electrolytes.
    Interaction:Do not prescribe concomitantly with drugs that suppress the cough center (including codeine), as this makes it difficult for the diluted sputum to escape. Compatible with bronchodilators, antimicrobial agents, cardiac glycosides.
    Special instructions:Possible coloration of urine pink: Results of the determination of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in the urine (with the use of nitrosonaphthol reagent) can be falsely overestimated due to the influence of metabolites of guaifenesin on color (taking guaifenesin should be discontinued 48 hours prior to collection of urine for this test).
    Guaifenesin and its metabolites can cause discolouration in the determination of vanillylmandelic acid in the urine and falsely elevate the results of the test with vanillmindalic acid on urinary catecholamines (taking guaifenesin should be discontinued 48 hours before urine collection for this test).
