Laxative. It has a direct effect on the intestinal mucosa due to irritation of its receptor apparatus. Strengthens the peristalsis of the large intestine and increases the secretion of mucus in it. The action occurs within an hour (15-60 minutes).

Pharmacokinetics:

Absorption is minimal. Is a prodrug, in an alkaline environment occurs hydrolysis with the formation of a metabolite, which has an irritant effect on the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract.

Indications:

Hypotonic and atonic constipation (including constipation in the elderly, constipation after surgery and childbirth).

Regulation of stool with hemorrhoids, proctitis, anus fracture.

Preparation of the large intestine for surgical interventions, radiographic and instrumental studies.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity, intestinal obstruction, spastic constipation, strangulated hernia, acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal cavity, abdominal pain of unknown origin,peritonitis; bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract; cystitis, acute proctitis, acute hemorrhoids, severe dehydration of the body, metrorrhagia, colon cancer, children under 8 years old.

Carefully:

Pregnancy, lactation, hepatic and / or renal failure.

Dosing and Administration:

Rectally.

Adults and children over 14 years of age: 10-20 mg (1-2 suppositories) per day;

children aged 8-14 years: 10 mg.

When preparing for an operative intervention or for diagnostic examinations in the evening and in the morning for 10 mg (1 suppository).

Side effects:

Pain and burning in the rectum; inflammation of the rectal mucosa; intestinal colic; Diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration, violation of water-electrolyte metabolism, development of muscle weakness, seizures, arterial hypotension; allergic reactions.

Overdose:

Symptoms: diarrhea, dehydration, disturbance of water-electrolyte balance, hypokalemia, atony of the large intestine.

Treatment: symptomatic.

Interaction:

Given that bisacodyl It is not absorbed from the intestine, interaction with other drugs is unlikely.

With simultaneous long-term use of bisacodyl in high doses with cardiac glycosides, their effect may increase due to hypokalemia.

Simultaneous long-term use of bisacodyl with diuretics and glucocorticoids may cause an increase in hypokalemia.

Special instructions:

Do not apply the drug for a long time (more than 7 days), as long-term use of the drug may lead to the fact that the reflex of bowel movement can manifest only after applying a laxative.

If bleeding from the rectum occurs with bisacodyl, the drug should be discontinued.

During the use of the drug should be consumed a large amount of fluid in order to ensure a normal consistency of stool.
