    Description:

    Colorless, transparent volatile liquid with a pungent odor. During storage, the formation of a fine crystalline precipitate is possible.

    Pharmacodynamics:

    Analeptic, antiseptic; at Inhalation causes irritation of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and reflexively excites the respiratory and vasomotor centers, has an irritating effect on the skin. In high concentrations causes a reflex stop of breathing. Has a disinfecting effect on the skin. With prolonged contact, the irritant effect on the skin can go into cauterization (coagulation of proteins) with the development of hyperemia, edema and soreness.

    Pharmacokinetics:It is rapidly excreted in any mode of administration, mainly by the lungs and bronchial glands.
    Indications:

    Fainting conditions, disinfection of the skin of hands, neutralization of acid toxins with insect bites.

    Contraindications:

    Hypersensitivity; violation of the integrity of the skin or inflammatory skin diseases at the site of the intended application (including dermatitis, eczema) and other skin diseases (for external use).

    Dosing and Administration:

    Inhalation, externally. To stimulate the breathing and remove the patients from the syncope, for which inhalation, carefully (for 0.5 - 1 s), bring to the nasal apertures wetted with a piece of cotton wool. In surgical practice (for disinfection) a solution of ammonia (25 ml per 5 liters of warm boiled water) is used to wash hands.     Side effects:Stopping breathing (reflex, when inhaled in high concentrations), flushing, swelling and tenderness of the skin at the site of application, allergic reactions.
    Overdose:

    When breathing in ammonia vapors, reflex respiratory arrest, with external application, irritation, dermatitis, eczema at the site of application. Therapy is symptomatic.

    Interaction:

    Neutralizes acids.
