A.11.H.A.03   Tocopherol (vitamin E)

Pharmacodynamics:

Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant. Protects the cellular membranes of body tissues from oxidative changes; stimulates the synthesis of gem and heme-containing enzymes - hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes, catalase, peroxidase. It inhibits the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids and selenium. Inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol. Prevents hemolysis of erythrocytes, increased permeability and fragility of capillaries, disruption of the function of the seminiferous tubules and testicles, placenta, normalizes reproductive function; prevents the development of atherosclerosis, degenerative-dystrophic changes in the heart muscle and skeletal muscles.

Indications:

Adults, in complex therapy: muscular dystrophies; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; dermatomyositis; spasms of peripheral vessels, menstrual irregularities; disorders of the sexual glands in men; dermatoses, psoriasis.

Contraindications:

Acute period of myocardial infarction.Increased individual sensitivity to the drug.

Carefully:

Hypoprothrombinemia, severe atherosclerosis coronary arteries, severe cardiosclerosis, a previous myocardial infarction, an increased risk of thromboembolism.

Pregnancy and lactation:During pregnancy and lactation, the appointment should be agreed with the doctor.
Dosing and Administration:For oral administration, the drug is administered in the following doses:

In diseases of the neuromuscular system (myodystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), 50-100 mg per day (25-30 drops of 100 mg / ml solution or 7-15 drops of 300 mg / ml solution) for 1-2 months. Repeated courses in 2-3 months.

Men with impaired function of the sex glands at 100-300 mg per day (50-150 drops of 100 mg / ml solution or 15-46 drops of 300 mg / ml solution) in combination with hormone therapy for a month.

When peripheral vascular diseases are 100 mg per day (50 drops of 100 mg / ml solution or 15 drops of 300 mg / ml solution) in combination with vitamin A. Duration of the course is 20-40 days, after 3-6 months the course of treatment can be repeated.

For skin diseases from 15 to 100 mg per day (7-50 drops of 100 mg / ml solution or 2-5 drops of 300 mg / ml solution) for 20-40 days.

1 drop from the eye dropper contains: alpha-Tocopherol acetate in 100 mg / ml solution - 2 mg; in a 300 mg / ml solution - 6.5 mg.

Repeated courses on the recommendation of a doctor.

Side effects:

Allergic reactions, dyspepsia, decreased efficiency, weakness, thrombophlebitis, thromboembolism of pulmonary arteries, thromboses, increased activity of creatine kinase, creatinuria, hypercholesterolemia, white hair growth in areas of alopecia with bubble epidermolysis.

Overdose:

When taken for a long period in doses of 400-800 units / day 1 mg = 1.21 ME) - blurred vision, dizziness, headache, nausea, unusual fatigue, diarrhea, gastralgia. If you take more than 800 units / day for a long period - an increased risk of bleeding in patients with hypovitaminosis K, a disorder of thyroid hormone metabolism, a sexual function disorder, thrombophlebitis, thromboembolism, necrotic colitis, sepsis, hepatomegaly, hyperbilirubinemia, renal failure, retinal hemorrhage eyes, hemorrhagic stroke, ascites.

Treatment: symptomatic, withdrawal of the drug, the appointment of glucocorticosteroid drugs.

Interaction:

Strengthens the effect of glucocorticosteroid drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antioxidants.

Increases the effectiveness of antiepileptic drugs in patients with epilepsy (who have increased blood levels of products of lipid peroxidation).

Reduces the effectiveness and toxicity of vitamins A, D, cardiac glycosides.

Simultaneous use of vitamin E at a dose of more than 400 units / day with anticoagulants (coumarin and indanedione derivatives) increases the risk of hypoprothrombinemia and bleeding.

Colestramine, colestipol, mineral oils reduce absorption. High doses Fe increase oxidative processes in the body, which increases the need for vitamin E.
