Pharmacodynamics:

Xylometazoline belongs to the group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic activity, causes narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, thus eliminating the edema and hyperemia of the nasal mucosa, restoring the nasal passages, facilitating nasal breathing.

The effect of the drug comes in a few minutes after its application and lasts up to 10 hours.

Pharmacokinetics:With topical application xylometazoline practically not absorbed, therefore its concentration in the blood plasma is very small (modern analytical methods are not determined).

Indications:

Acute respiratory diseases with phenomena of rhinitis (rhinitis); acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, hay fever; otitis media (as part of combination therapy to reduce edema of the nasopharynx mucosa); Preparation of the patient for diagnostic manipulation (rhinoscopy).

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, glaucoma atrophic rhinitis, thyrotoxicosis, surgical interventions on the meninges (in the anamnesis), children under 2 years for the application of 0.05% solution and up to 6 years - for 0.1% solution.

Do not use with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Carefully:

Ischemic heart disease (angina pectoris III-IV functional class), prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, lactation.

Dosing and Administration:

Intranasally.

Adults and children over 6 years of age 1 injection of 0.1% xylometazoline solution in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day.

Children aged 2 to 6 years apply 0.05% xylometazoline solution for 1 injection in each nasal passage 1 -2 times a day.

Do not use the drug more than 3 times a day. The course of treatment for rhinitis should not exceed 5-7 days.

Side effects:

With frequent and / or prolonged use - irritation and / or dryness of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx, burning, paresthesia, sneezing,hypersecretion; swelling of the nasal mucosa, palpitations, tachycardia, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, vomiting, headache, insomnia, impaired vision; depression (with prolonged use of high doses).

Overdose:

Symptoms: decrease in body temperature, bradycardia, increased blood pressure pressure.

Treatment: symptomatic.

Interaction:

Incompatible with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Special instructions:

Before application, it is necessary to clean the nasal passages.

Do not use more than 7 days.

Usually xylometazoline does not affect the performance and does not hinder the work of drivers of vehicles or the management of moving machinery.
